How Do I Generate a Test with AI?

Learn how to generate tests with AI in ExamLive. Describe what you need in chat, let the assistant build it, then review before publishing.

Where to find it

Click the sparkles icon in the top-right header to open the AI assistant, or press Ctrl+. (+. on Mac). You can also pick Generate with AI from the Add Question menu while editing a test's questions (it also appears on your dashboard). In the chat box, Ctrl+Enter sends your message (+Enter on Mac); plain Enter starts a new line.

How it works

You describe what you need in plain language: create ten multiple choice questions on a topic, build a mixed-type quiz, rework questions that are too hard, anything along those lines. The assistant acts directly in your organization, creating tests and inserting questions for you rather than just printing text to copy over. Destructive requests, like deleting a question or an entire test, always stop for your confirmation first. You can also attach a file, like a syllabus, a past paper, or your own notes, and the assistant will base questions on it. See Attach Files to the AI Assistant.

Credits

Each request consumes credits from your balance depending on the model chosen and how much gets generated. Your remaining balance is visible in the panel, and running out produces a clear message instead of a silent failure. Top-ups are explained in AI Credits.

Always review before publishing

Generated content is a starting point. Open the questions in the editor to verify facts, double-check answer keys, and adjust point values; they behave exactly like hand-written ones once created. The assistant can also reorder questions for you if you ask. See Question Types for the editing details.

Publishing results

Once submissions are graded, the same assistant can publish the results for you and pull them back if you need to correct something, always with your confirmation. See Publish Results with AI.
