How Do I Create and Design Certificates?

Learn how to create certificates in ExamLive. Start from a preset, design the layout, add your logo, and set the score a participant needs to earn one.

Where to find it

Open Certificates from the sidebar. The page has three tabs: Templates for the designs you've built, Awarded for the certificates already issued, and Pending for the ones waiting on you. Click New certificate to open the editor.

Starting from a preset

A blank canvas is a lot of blank space, so start from one of the three presets. Each is a finished layout rather than a color scheme, and you can keep it as-is or pull it apart:

Preset Saved as Reads as
Modern Modern Certificate Standard certification, course completion.
Gold Banner Gold Banner Certificate High achievement, honors, distinction.
Minimal Minimal Certificate Participation, attendance, general recognition.

The saved name is only the label you see in your own list, so rename it to something you'll recognize in six months, like Safety Induction 2026.

Building the layout

The Design tab is a canvas of 1056 by 816 pixels, which is landscape Letter, and the PDF a participant downloads comes out at that same size. The preview updates as you work, so what you see is what they get.

  • Text adds a text box. Type anything fixed, like "Certificate of Achievement", or drop in a variable that fills itself in per participant.
  • Logo places your organization's logo, the one image that varies by organization rather than by participant.
  • Line and Shape cover rules, underlines, and boxes for framing.
  • Add a custom variable is there for anything the built-ins don't cover.

The built-in variables are the participant's name, the test name, the score and its maximum, the percentage, the date, your organization name, and the certificate ID. You pick them from a list rather than typing them, and each is labeled in your own terminology: Participant name on a business workspace, Student name on a school one.

Select any element to set its font, size, weight, color, and alignment, then drag it into position. Background takes a solid color or a gradient, which is usually the quickest way to stop a plain layout looking unfinished.

Variables are what let one template work for everyone. A single Safety Induction 2026 issued to forty participants carries forty different names and scores, with no extra setup on your side.

Deciding who gets one

A template does nothing until it's linked to a test. Switch to the Link to Test tab, pick the test, and two settings decide what happens next:

  • Auto-award picks automatic or manual. On, the certificate is issued when that test's results are published. Off, it waits for you on the Pending tab.
  • Condition applies only when auto-award is on: Always, Minimum score, or Minimum percentage, plus the number you want.

Minimum percentage at 80 is the usual pass mark and reads the same way your results do. Minimum score counts raw points instead, so 18 out of 25 reads very differently from 72 percent. Pick whichever form your results already report.

One template can be linked to several tests, and each link keeps its own condition.

Saving

Save stores the template and puts it on the Templates tab with a thumbnail. Its three-dot menu duplicates it, reopens it for editing, or deletes it.

A template that has already been awarded can't be deleted. Leave it where it is and make a new one if you need a different design. Editing it only changes certificates issued from then on.
